RALEIGH — Four roadside crosses serve as reminders of the teenagers who died last week on Interstate 540.
Since the crash, students, friends and family have left flowers and messages at the make-shift memorial, but there is a growing concern for the safety of the people who stand along busy I-540.
"Being along the highway, especially a highway with speeds like we have out on I-540, it's real important that we don't create a situation where people aren't paying attention at all times," says DOT engineer Jon Nance.
Nance says the DOT is sensitive to the significance of the roadside memorial. He says the department will keep an eye on it as it continues to expand.
