Warrant Recalled For Bus Driver In Massey Hill Crash
Posted June 7, 2001
FAYETTEVILLE — A warrant that was issued for Darol Wayne Britt, the driver of a bus that crashed with Fayetteville high school students onboard, has been recalled.
Parents and a student came to the Cumberland County Courthouse Thursday morning to confront Darol Britt, who investigators say caused the crash on April 6.
Britt, 38, was supposed to make a court appearance, but he did not show up. His lawyer was late asking for a planned continuance which means Britt was not required to appear.
He was charged with driving while ill or fatigued. Because of the condition of the brakes, he was also charged with operating a commercial vehicle in such condition likely to create an accident.
A DMV investigator says although the charges are misdemeanors, when arrested, Britt will remain behind bars until his next court appearance.
Britt, who owned the bus that crashed, was hired as a subcontractor by AMA Tours to drive students from
Massey Hill Classical High School
to a band competition in Orlando, Fla.
The bus crashed on Interstate 95 near the Georgia-Florida border. Twenty-two students were injured.
