Thirteen Inmates Graduate From Shaw Program

Posted Updated

LILLINGTON — Prison rehabilitation usually means learning a skill, but 13 inmates at Harnett County Correctional Institution did more than that -- they earned a college degree.

Shaw University offers the program to inmates and the state helps to fund it.

Advocates of the program say it gives inmates who qualify the opportunity to have a successful life on the outside upon release.

"Because they are here at Harnett today, that serves as no final limitation for them in the future. They're Shaw men," Dr. Ernest Pickens, executive vice president of Shaw, said.

The Shaw University program is also offered at the Women's Correctional Center in Raleigh.
