Wilsons Mills Vote On Beer Sales Passes By One Vote

Only 10 percent of the voters in Wilsons Mill turned out.

"Unfortunately I was one of those who didn't know what was going on," says resident Dean Moellman. "I guess I was one of those nine out of 10 who didn't show up. I was surprised at how close it was."

Mayor Kenneth Jones says that the tax receipts from beer sales could slow the increase of property taxes. Wilson Mills became a town just five years ago and has grown over 50 percent since then.

"You need to be a part of your town," he says. "You need to take your voting rights seriously because it pays off."

The turnout was low, the margin tiny, but in the end, one vote changed everything.

The Johnston County Board of Elections will make the results official Friday morning. There are three outstanding write-in votes, but they are not expected to change the outcome.
