DOT To Build Temporary Connector Road From I-540 To RTP

Posted Updated

WAKE COUNTY — Officials from theState Department of Transportationhave announced plans to build a temporary connector road from Interstate 540 to Research Triangle Park.

DOT officials made the decision after engineers determined an High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane for Interstate 40 from Wade Ave. to Highway 15/501 in Durham is not feasible. The temporary road would go from I-540 to Slater Road until the interstate is extended to Davis Drive.

Other plans include building an extra lane for Interstate 40 from Interstate 540 to Highway 15-501. Work on that project is slated to start later this year.

Officials want to extend I-540 to Research Triangle Park with exits at N.C. Highway 54, 55 and a temporary exit at Kit Creek Road, starting in 2003. They also plan to widen Highway 55 from Cornwallis Road in Durham to Highway 64 in Apex, starting in 2002.
