— An accident involving a watermelon truck caused traffic delays Tuesday morning on westbound Interstate 40 near Jones Sausage Road in Wake County.

A truck driven by Mickey Rooney Phillips, 38, of Goldsboro, was eastbound on I-40 when its trailer full of watermelons came loose, according to an accident report. The trailer crossed the highway median and struck a westbound vehicle driven by William Jeffry Ross, 39, of Clayton, according to the report.

The wreck scattered watermelons across the roadway, and two of the three westbound I-40 lanes were blocked as crews worked to clear the scene.

Considering it was my other half who hit the runaway watermelon trailer and went to the hospital, sure am glad WRAL said there was no injuries.

Services for the dead watermelons will be at 6.

gopanthers, and anyone else wondering how to pick a ripe melon... you're in luck! as the NC Watermelon Queen (yes, there is such a thing) it is my job to go out and promote the watermelon industry of NC! steps to picking out a ripe melon:

    1) when you tap on it (not thump) make sure it has a hollow sound
    2) make sure it is heavy for its size
3)it should have that creamy yellow ground spot on one side
4)make sure its color is a rich green and is free of cuts/bruises
5)if you're lucky enough to find one with a slight stem left on the end, and the melon also fits the above qualifications, you should be good to go!

visit www.ncmelons.com for more fun facts and ideas, and remember to enjoy watermelons this summer... maybe just not off I-40!

also, please join me, along with the NC Dept. of Agriculture and the NC Watermelon Association, on July 12th or August 9th at the Raleigh Farmer's Market for more watermelon fun, recipe ideas, and maybe even a seed spit contest! =)
