RALEIGH, N.C. — An accident involving a watermelon truck caused traffic delays Tuesday morning on westbound Interstate 40 near Jones Sausage Road in Wake County.

A truck driven by Mickey Rooney Phillips, 38, of Goldsboro, was eastbound on I-40 when its trailer full of watermelons came loose, according to an accident report. The trailer crossed the highway median and struck a westbound vehicle driven by William Jeffry Ross, 39, of Clayton, according to the report.

The wreck scattered watermelons across the roadway, and two of the three westbound I-40 lanes were blocked as crews worked to clear the scene.
