Fayetteville Post Office Renamed For Former Mayor

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — The main post office in Fayetteville is now the J.L. Dawkins Federal Post Office Building. The official dedication ceremony for the former mayor was held on Friday.

Dawkins died a year ago during his seventh term as mayor. State Representatives Robin Hayes and Mike McIntyre sponsored a bill in Congress to officially change the name. They wanted the city's longest serving mayor to always be remembered.

"We are just in awe that people love him as much as we did and that people in Fayetteville miss him as much as we miss him," says Dawn Caison, Dawkins' daughter. "I learn everyday how important he was to the city. I know how important the city was to him."

The post office issued a special commemorative cancellation on Friday to further honor the former mayor.
