e-mail print friendly

What was called a "suspicious military device" outside a Food Lion in Spout Springs turned out to be an extended military parachute flare, Harnett County authorities said late Wednesday night.

The Harnett County Sheriff's Office responded to a call it received at about 9:30 p.m. to the Food Lion off of N.C. Highway 87, where the flare had been found near a propane tank.

About five nearby businesses were evacuated as a precaution.

The sheriff's office, as well as Spout Springs Fire Department, Harnett County fire marshal's office and the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit out of Fort Bragg, was called to the scene.
