RALEIGH, N.C. — A UNC-Chapel Hill student who survived a fall from a dormitory window is now recovering at his home in Asheville.

Tyler Downey fell from the third floor of Stacy Residence Hall last month. He suffered fractures to his face, shoulder and back, but did not need surgery.

Downey's mother told WRAL that her son is doing well and walking around.

His friend, Keith Smith, a resident advisor at UNC-CH also fell out of the window. He died at the scene.

Downey plans to return to UNC in the fall.
