RALEIGH — Omar Parker, a senior at Cardinal Gibbons High School, excels in everything he does.
Parker, the captain of the Crusaders baseball team, is a .300 hitter who can play the outfield. He is also a receipent of the Parks scholarship at N.C. State. He is also heavily involved in the school's Student Government.
"I frequently forget he is a student. I will find myself in conversation with him and say, 'I keep forgeting that you are a senior in high school,'" says vice-principal Brother Gary Cregan. "He is a top scholar. He is probably the smartest kid that we have had in this school in a long number of years."
His baseball coach, Jim Liebler, speaks very highly of Parker.
"He wants to work harder than anyone else, whether it is in the classroom or on the baseball field or catching that flyball in the gap," says coach Jim Liebler.
"That sense of accomplishment that you have when you accomplish things, that drives me. There are people who want me to do well, but it is always me to drive me to do the best that I can because anything less would be disappointing.
Omar Parker is this week's winner of the Extra Effort Award.
Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
