A Cumberland County father has been charged with child neglect after he fell asleep on his sofa and his son wandered away from home.

Anthony Lamont McDaniel, 25, turned himself into authorities Thursday. On Monday, employees at Pate Derby Company noticed Leviticus McDaniel in the company parking lot. They thought the boy belonged to one of the workers there, but later became concerned when the boy tried to climb a fence topped with barbed wire.

After deputies were called to the scene, they tried to locate the child's parents. Nearly six hours after the child's disappearance, his parents, Anthony Lamont McDaniel and Juanda Carter, called deputies asking if a child had been found.

Both McDaniel and Carter came to the Cumberland County Law Enforcement Center with two other family members to pick up the child. The parents were questioned and the child was sent home with a grandmother.

Anthony Lamont McDaniel surrendered to authorities Thursday and was later released on a $1,500 unsecured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for March 16.
