Trial Under Way For Driver In Fatal Raleigh Wreck

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The trial of a man accused of killing his girlfriend and her son in a 2004 accident is now under way.

Shavonda Commissiong, 26, and her 5-year-old son, Jay-lin Commissiong, died when their vehicle crashed on Leesville Road.

The driver, Anderson Hazelwood, walked away from the accident uninjured. He is charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

Stacy Ellis, Shavonda Commissiong's sister, said it bothers her that Hazelwood has not apologized for the accident.

"I just think he needs to pay for what he has done," she said. "He seems to feel that he's done no wrong with anything that he does. Well, he needs to pay."

Authorities said the vehicle was going 100 mph in a 35 mph zone. Hazelwood blames the accident on a chase. The Highway Patrol denies that claim.
