CARY — The town of Cary has been praised for its efforts to deal with growth inrecent years, but some property owners claim the town is unwilling to payfor the price of progress.

A mile-long road-widening project of S.E. Maynard Road is set tobegin from justwest of Walnut Road to Kildaire Farm Road. In an attempt to ease traffic, the town wants to widen S.E. MaynardRoad to five lanes.

More than 70 other property owners will lose asizable chunk of their front yards. The town has already settledcompensation withmost homeowners, but some are still holding out.

After an initial offerof $1,900, the town offered Joe Stanley $5,000 for his loss, but he declined the offer.

"In reality, I feel like I'm losing $20,000 to $30,000 on myproperty," he says.

After months of delays, Cary leaders saythey are close to taking the land by imminentdomain and letting the courts settle the claims.

"You can keep negotiating, and at some point, you need to move onwith the project," says staff engineer Tom Ellis.

Some homeowners say they understand that they could lose their homes, but they are not ready to give up their fight.

"It's going to happen. I know it's going tohappen. I just want to make sure that I don'tlose the value of my home," says property owner Carolyn Mintz.

The remaining holdouts have hired an attorney to help in their case.Cary engineers say compensation offers areall based on independent appraisals.Construction is set to start in July.
