Southern Pines Gears Up For 2001 U.S. Women's Open

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Plans for the2001 U.S. Women's Openare swinging into action.
At Pine Needles in Southern Pines, the leaderboard is up and final preparations are being made to the course. More than 2,500 volunteers have signed up to work at the tournament.
The event is expected to pump more than $50 million into the economy and break attendance records with 115,000 spectators.
"So far, people have responded tremendously. We're really in the final stages, but we're still hoping we can get people out to experience golf," says Kelly Miller, general manager of Pine Needles.
The 2001 U.S. Women's Open runs from May 28 to June 3. Tickets and local hotel rooms are still available.
