Rain Sinks 'Pops in the Park'

RALEIGH — Heavy rains have sunk WRAL's annual "Pops in the Park" concert.
The concert was originally scheduled for Sunday, but bad weather led organizers to shift to a rain date of Monday. Once again, the rain did not cooperate.
Event organizers made the decision to cancel on Monday morning after assessing the effects of heavy rains in the area over the weekend as well as the threat of more inclement weather in the evening.
Last year, the "Pops in the Park" was cancelled due to the arrival of Hurricane Dennis.
When the weather cooperates, almost 40,000 concertgoers sit on the grounds of Meredith College to bid a musical farewell to summer and a hello to autumn.
The event also traditionally serves as a kick-off to the Triangle United Way campaign and the start of the symphony's new season.
Despite the cancellation of "Pops in the Park," music lovers have many opportunities to enjoy the symphony. The next Raleigh concert will be staged Sept. 22 and 23 at Memorial Auditorium.
