MOUNT OLIVE — Some people in Mount Olive will celebrate the new year Sunday night under the "ambiance" of a giant pickle.

A colossal cucumber will be lowered from a crane at the Mount Olive Pickle Company. This is the first year for the tradition inspired during World War II when American pilots were reportedly so accurate they could drop a bomb in a pickle barrel.

"It's about a four-foot-tall polyethylene pickle. It floats. We actually call it a pool pickle," says Lynn Williams of the Mount Olive Pickle Company. "Raleigh has its acorn, and New York has its apple. Mount Olive has its pickle."

The pickle comes down at 7 p.m. on New Year's Eve. Employees of the company and their families are invited.
