Cary Police Use Sweet Rewards To Preach Bike Safety

Posted Updated

CARY — Instead of law breakers, Cary police officers are looking for law abiders. They are rewarding young bike riders who care about safety.

Any child they find who is wearing a bike helmet gets a free coupon for ice cream. The children are also given stickers, making them junior police officers.

Officers say the positive reinforcement is paying off.

"It's good for them to be able to put a face and name with a police officer so they're not intimidated to come up and speak with us," says officer Wyatt Crabtree. "Of course, anytime you offer free ice cream, everybody is going to want to come out."

Other communities are considering bike helmet laws, however Cary is the only town in Wake County with the ordinance.
