Family Speaks Out as Suspects in I-95 Overpass Attack are Sentenced

Michael Vytlingam was seriously injured when the men dropped a rock from an I-95 overpass that crashed into his SUV in March 1999.

Vytlingam's family came from Canada to see and confront Todd Farmer, 25, and Anthony Raynor, 22, the men who admitted Friday to dropping the rocks from the overpass.

They pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Farmer was sentenced to eight to 10 years in prison. Raynor got 10 to 14 years in prison.

The Vytlingams took an opportunity to speak to the men.

"I think of it, and it just bothers me that Michael will never be able to see the light of day," his father, Dennis.

"Every day, my brother gets up in the morning, and he's in darkness," Michael's sister, Suzanna Sukhu, cried. "Every time he goes to bed, he's in darkness. That's how it will be for the rest of his life."

The teenager was left blind and brain-damaged after the 27-pound rock crashed through the SUV. After a long, difficult road of recovery, he is walking and talking on his own.

The judge denied Farmer's request to get work release and pay restitution to the family.

The Vytlingam's attorney says that Michael's medical fees have added up to about $500,000 so far. He predicts that they will add up to well over $5 million over Michael's lifetime. The family plans to pursue Raynor and Farmer in civil court.
