RALEIGH, N.C. — A jury found a Raleigh man guilty of first-degree murder Thursday in the stabbing death of a 22-year-old woman.

Jurors took 27 minutes to return their verdict against Byron Waring. Waring is one of two men charged with the Nov. 8, 2005 slaying of Lauren Redman.

Police said Redman was raped and stabbed more than 20 times inside her Raleigh apartment.

Prosecutors said Waring and Joseph Sanderlin went to Redman's apartment to collect on a debt owned to her former roommate, George Sasser.

Sanderlin is charged with murder in the case, while Sasser is charged as an accessory after the fact.

On Wednesday, jurors listened to a taped confession from Waring.

The sentencing phase will start Friday, when Waring could face the death penalty.
