2 Die in Durham Crash

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Police say speed and slick roads were factors in a deadly accident in Durham.

Two young women were killed early Saturday when their car crossed the center line and slammed into a tree on University Drive.

Mackenzie Epps, 18, was a Northern Durham High School student. She was the driver of the 1997 Mitsubishi Galant.

Also killed was 20-year-old Leticia Lewis. She was a Livingstone College student from Mount Vernon, N.Y.

Investigators do not think alcohol was a factor, but speed may have been. Both women were wearing seatbelts.

Authorities said the car was driving at twice the posted speed limit. The speed limit is 35 mph, but investigators said the car was traveling 20 miles per hour faster.

The women had been headed for a convenience store two blocks from the crash scene.
