FAYETTEVILLE — As soon as the Thanksgiving meal is over, most of us start planning a major shopping trip. As you look for gifts in your favorite department stores, it is important to make sure thieves do not find you first.

Patricia Mayfield usually shops with her son or husband, but now that she is alone, her defenses are up.

"You have to be careful," she says. "I try not to carry a lot of stuff on me."

Julian Adkins shops with his two daughters. He keeps one eye on his girls and the other on his bags.

"We always keep the gifts near us. Always keep them in our hands," he says.

James Baker, manager atCross Creek Mall, says shoppers need to be extra careful when they are in the parking lots

"The holiday season brings out a lot of people that are looking for things for free," he says. "We want to make sure shoppers try and park in areas that are well-lit, and be aware of the fact the lights are still on when they get back in their car."

Here are some other things you can do to protect yourself:
  • Have your keys ready when approaching your car.
  • Make sure your handbag is close to your body.
  • Put your bags in the trunk, not the back seat where they can be seen in plain view.
