Denim Plant Closes Down, Leaves More Than 700 Workers Out Of Job

Posted Updated

ERWIN — A cloud is hanging over the holidays in one small Harnett County town. Dozens of workers walked off the job for the last time Friday as a major plant closes up shop.

David Morrison worked at the Swift Denim plant for 51 years. His father worked there for 49. Morrison had a close relationship with his co-workers, and he says losing his job is like losing a family member.

"It was a bad thing when they told us they were going to close down. It just hurts," he says.

Workers in the weaving and maintenance departments will have their jobs until early December. The mill's closing will put more than 700 people out of a job.
