James White says officers were rough with him when he was arrested more than a year ago. It turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.
Police say, during the last three years, there have been close to 50 excessive force complaints by citizens. However, only one of those was found to be valid.
"We don't identify it as a pattern. We don't see it as a problem," says Lt. Katherine Bryant of the Fayetteville Police Department.
This year, there were three cases alleging excessive force by Fayetteville Police. None of the people who complained showed up in court. Two of the three officers allegedly involved are no longer with the department.
The police department is applying for a $40,000 grant to study the effects of race on patrol officers' behaviors.
