Wake Forest Officials Square Off Over Use Of Private Detective

Posted Updated

WAKE FOREST — The latest fight in a long-time dispute between a local mayor and a police department could have come straight out of a soap opera.

Wake ForestMayor George Mackie and the publisher of the local paper say the police department has not done enough to snuff out drug activity in town. They planned their own investigation hiring a private detective to walk the streets and catch drug trades in action.

"It's a private investigation," says Mayor George Mackie. "We've done nothing wrong. We wanted to find out what was going on."

The investigation did find illegal drugs downtown. However, state officials suspended the private detective because it is illegal to purchase drugs as part of a private investigation.

The Wake Forest town commission will discuss the mayor's actions at its next meeting.
