Posted Updated

HOPE MILLS — Police are looking for a child who was taken from the front seat of his mother's car Wednesday evening.

Police say Joi Rivers stopped at the Quick Stop convenience store in Hope Mills at 9 p.m. to pick up groceries. When she left the store, she found her car was missing. Her five-year-old son, Eric, was still inside the car when she was in the store.

Police are looking for a blue 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier with a 30-day license tag and a big dent on the driver's side. Police say they do not know what the motive is.

"Whether the original plan was for a kidnapping or just to steal the car to get from point A to point B. We just don't know at this time," says police chief J.W. Hodges. "We are still trying to piece everything together."

Dwayne Rivers, Eric's uncle, says he is hoping for his nephew's safe return.

"Please just return him safely," Rivers says.

Police say a white woman was last seen driving the car. Police say she may be heading toward Robeson County.

Anyone with any information about the boy's whereabouts is asked to contact the Hope Mills Police Department at910-425-4103.
