Project Fan Aims to Keep Durham Seniors Cool this Summer

Posted Updated

DURHAM — The sweltering heat can be hard to handle. It is especially tough on the elderly, who often do not know where to turn for help. Now, senior citizens in Durham County are getting some relief from the heat.

Project Fan provides free fans for residents over 60 years old who need help dealing with the hot temperatures.

Many senior citizens are on a fixed income and cannot afford air conditioning. For some, the recent heat wave has been tough to handle.

"I think it's wonderful. It's a great help to me because I had an old one that gave out. So this is just what I needed," says recipient Addie Whitted.

There are more than 20,000 senior citizens in Durham County.

Right now, the program has about 200 fans. Workers expect most of them will be gone by the end of July.

If you or someone you know needs help staying cool this summer, contact your county's social services department.
