Flaming Chatham Car Crash Claims 2 Lives

Posted Updated

PITTSBORO, N.C. — Two people, one a Burlington man, died and a Burlington woman was hurt when two cars collided head-on on U.S. 15-501 in Chatham County, state troopers reported.

One of the dead could not be identified immediately because one car was destroyed by fire after the crash, they said.

The accident happened shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, the Highway patrol said.

A white 2005 Lexus was southbound when it ran off the right side of the road between Pittsboro and Walter Bright Road, troopers said. The car hit a guardrail and went back onto the road and across the centrer line, hitting a northbound car.

Daniel Ray Leath, 43, was killed, troopers said. Amanda Boonce Etchison, 28, was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Troopers added that Leath had not been wearing a seat belt.

They also said two men in a second northbound vehicle stopped and pulled Leath's and Etchison's car away from the flaming Lexus.
