Isaac Strengthens to Category 3 Hurricane, Still Far From Land

RALEIGH — Isaac strengthened into a major hurricane over the Atlantic Saturday, but it remains very far from land.

The storm was centered at about 1,720 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 120 mph.

Some additional strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours.

Isaac is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph, and this motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 85 miles.
