Vance County Man Impersonates DMV Officer To Defraud Victims

Posted Updated

VANCE COUNTY — Vance County detectives say someone is using a DMV uniform to defraud victims.

Investigators say 33-year-old Darnell Mason is impersonating a DMV officer and told people he could get them great deals on repossessed or seized cars.

Investigators say he showed victims pictures of high-priced cars and convinced at least 12 people to pay him thousands of dollars in advance money. He never delivered on the promise.

"We believe there are many more victims out there," says Vance County Sheriff Thomas Breedlove. "It covers a three or four county area and possibly more. He's a smooth talker, and he has a silver tongue."

Sheriff Breedlove hopes other victims will come forward. Mason was picked up in Henderson last week. He is currently being held in the Halifax County Jail on fraud charges.
