DURHAM — Durham County deputies say they busted a postal worker red-handed as he tried to throw away hundreds of pieces of mail.

Investigators say the mailman stashed bills, letters, magazines and packages dating back to last November.

A deputy saw the suspect throwing several large garbage bags into the woods. When he opened the bags, he could not believe what he saw.

"[The postal worker] said, 'It's just some stuff I had at my house. I'll get it out of here,'" says Det. Claude Chamberlain of the Durham County Sheriff's Office. "That's when we took control and realized what it was."

More mail was found Thursday along Oxford Highway.

Detectives have already contacted theU.S. Postal Servicein Charlotte. The old mail will be delivered eventually.
