Students Skip Class To Steal From Durham Homes

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Investigators say playing hooky played a new purpose for some Durham students.

Six teens from Jordan High School and Sherwood Githens Middle are suspects in a string of break-ins. Police believe the students skipped class and stole guns, ammo and jewelry from homes near Jordan High.

Police discovered the stolen weapons and ammunition underneath a tree near the school.

"We don't think that the students that stole the firearms had any intent on using them against other students," says Det. Ben Parrish of the Durham Police Department. "There was no mention of that when they were interviewed."

Police have arrested David Newcomb, Shelby Jones, Charlie Alston Jr. and Nakia Taborn. Two other suspects remain at large.

Durham Public Schools had no comment.
