DURHAM, N.C. — A former Durham city councilor accused of hitting his estranged wife said it was an accident.
John Best was arrested at around 1 a.m. Thursday. He said the incident happened during a disagreement over their son.
Best claims he and his estranged wife's new boyfriend got into a fight and she accidentally got hit in the scuffle.
On Thursday, a judge told Best to get a psychological exam and be checked for substance abuse. Best must also stay away from his wife.
