CUMBERLAND COUNTY — Cumberland County wants to improve the health of its citizens. The local fitness council held its first meeting Thursday.
Fitness and health professionals hope an increase in physical activity will improve how people feel. They are looking for ways to provide more opportunities for people in the community to become active.
"Improving physical fitness will decrease our risk of chronic diseases," says Renita Vega of theCumberland County Health Department. "Everybody knows that chronic diseases don't start in old age. They begin at young ages, therefore we are looking for ways to reduce that."
The council will be working with schools, churches and other organizations to promote physical fitness.
