Former NCSU Employee Denies Misuse of Funds

Posted Updated

RALEIGH (AP) — Former North Carolina State University Public Safety Director Ralph Lex Harper is denying that he misused university equipment or spent department money on items for himself.

Harper's spending is the subject of a state auditor's investigation into possible misuse of funds. N-C State officials also have asked the State Bureau of Investigation to conduct a probe.

Harper spoke publicly yesterday for the first time since he was relieved of duty after a June article in The News and Observer of Raleigh.

The newspaper reported that he had used more than two (M) million dollars in unspent department salary money to help buy vehicles, electronic equipment and other items that the university later deemed unnecessary.

Harper said yesterday that he never purchased anything with North Carolina State University funds for his personal use.
