Former Hacker Now Working in ECU Computer System

Posted Updated

GREENVILLE (AP) — Three years ago, Nolan Waithe Grant was arrested for hacking into the East Carolina University computer network. Now, he's on the school payroll and working in the computer system.

Grant was hired on August 16th with a salary of more than $21,000.

Court documents say Grant and fellow senior Jason Cooper Hines accessed academic program files and destroyed some students' records. A warrant for Grant's arrest says he issued a command that caused an unauthorized shutdown of the computer system in April 1997. He pleaded guilty to charges stemming from his actions.

Since that time, the school has beefed up its computer security.

Jeff Huskamp, director of computer and information systems confirmed yesterday that Grant was an employee. He won't say if he knew of Grant's hacking history when Grant was hired.
