UNC Freshmen Participate In Pedestrian Safety Seminar

UNC freshman Andy Pike says the traffic on campus and around Franklin Street is something to think about.

"You don't really know. You want to get to class, but you don't really realize that there are cars out there," he says.

Chief Derek Poarch, director of public safety at UNC, gave words of wisdom about traffic safety to the incoming freshmen at the seminar.

"It is our belief that education is the most appropriate way to deal with the 40,000 people on campus every day," he says.

Florescent yellow signs on campus mark safe places to walk on campus, but some places are still dangerous if drivers are not looking out for walkers.

"Make sure that you make eye contact with the motorists that are traveling before you actually step out on the crosswalk to ensure that they are stopping," Poarch says.

One student died and four students were injured in street crossings last year at UNC.
