Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — More than 1,100 veterans are gathering in Fayetteville to remember and honor the people who gave everything to protect freedom.

Members of the1st Cavalry Division Associationare in Fayetteville for their53rd annual reunion. Seeing old friends, looking at old pictures and telling stories bring back the good and bad memories of youth and war.

"You get choked up when you first see them," says Vietnam veteran Oliver Jackson. "Just thinking about it now gets you a little choked up."

Each of the men has a special piece of history -- stories you cannot find in any history book. They know firsthand what it is like to serve their nation in war.

The four-day event ends Sunday. The veterans will get a sneak peek atFayetteville's new Airborne and Special Operations Museumon Friday.

The museum opens to the public on August 16.
