Kids' Fitness Program Looks to a Trim Future

Posted Updated

CARY — One out of four American kids is overweight. One in two does not get enough exercise. A health club in Cary hopes to change that with a unique fitness program.

It may look as if the youngsters are just running around having a good time, but they're doing much more than that. They are exercising, and learning good habits at a young age.

"So when they're 2, they like to exercise. When they're 3 and when they're 5 and when they're 12, they're still exercising," says coach Carol Breneman. "So when they're my age they like to exercise, too."

Cary Fitness and Racquetball Club is one of only three in the nation to offer Fit Club. It is an exercise program for 2 to 5 year olds. The program allows the children to use their imagination, and it allows their parents to work out at the same time.

"I'm a teacher and I have the summers off, so we were looking for something we could both do together," says parent Kathy Newman.

Older kids at the health club are getting in shape with Kids' Pace. It is a program for children ages 6 through 12 that incorporates circuit training designed especially for them.

"We try to challenge them as far as strength and cardiovascular endurance and flexibility, too, says coach Nanette Newbry. "But I think the main thing is just to show them that it's fun to exercise and have fun with other kids."

The goal is that even when these kids are no longer kids, they will think of exercise as fun.

The classes are offered twice a week, but the club hopes to expand the kids' program in September.
