Cumberland County Needs Donations To Maintain Animal Shelter

Posted Updated

CUMBERLAND COUNTY — The Cumberland County animal shelter needs your help. The shelter has run out of money to treat stray and injured cats and dogs. Thousands of them may have to be euthanized.

After days in the Cumberland County animal shelter, a dog is going to a new home -- the home of Ronnie Johnson.

"I left work a while ago, and I decided, 'Well, I believe I'll swing by the animal shelter and see what they have,'" Johnson says. "I just got fortunate."

Most of the cats and dogs at the shelter may not be as lucky. The animal shelter picks up more than 1,000 stray dogs and cats every month. Most of the animals are stuck there until an owner claims them or someone adopts them. Eighty percent of them get put to sleep.

"It's kind of depressing if you think about it," Johnson says. "That's the reason why I've been here several times and adopted a few of the animals here. I think it helps out."

The animal shelter is asking for donations so people will not have to pick up the tab for emergency treatment.

"This is a better option than having to put them to sleep," says Cumberland County Animal Control officer Sgt. Jonny Smith.

Smith hopes to collect $10,000 in donations. If you would like to make a donation, you can call Cumberland County Animal Control at910-321-6852.
