CUMBERLAND COUNTY — Just days away from his 71st birthday, Cumberland County commissioner Tom Bacote died Tuesday afternoon after a long battle with emphysema.
Bacote has a long record of public service in Cumberland County dating back to 1990.
County commissioners decided to hold their last budget proposal meeting at High Smith Rainey Memorial Hospital to accommodate Bacote.
"When he told you something, it was like money in the bank. You could depend on him," says commissioner Lee Warren. "He was a fair and honorable man. He was one who will be missed in the community for many years."
Bacote had retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel and was a former teacher.
