Water Main Break Closes Some Sanford Businesses

Posted Updated

SANFORD — Water has been restored to most of thetown of Sanfordafter an early morning water main break in the east part of the city. Twenty local industries, two schools and 1,500 residents were without water for several hours.

Crews worked throughout the afternoon to fix the water main, which apparently split as a result of old age.

"It's been here for a long time. I would say it's probably 40 or 50 years old. Sometimes it's a cast iron line and it gets tired just like we do," says water superintendent Terry Windham.

Most service was restored by Thursday evening, but crews say it still may take a few hours to get everyone back online.

The affected area was approximately six to eight city blocks and included East Lee Middle School, subdivisions and a mobile home park.

The Sanford Department of Public Works brought water to the middle school so students and staff could flush toilets and run the air conditioning system.

"This is the last day of school, so nothing's usual," said principal Eric Pittard.

The first shift at Moen Industries was canceled Thursday for everyone but salaried employees. Some third shift employees are expected. Coty also called off its first shift and may not have a second shift. Employees are asked to call for more information.
