Crews worked throughout the afternoon to fix the water main, which apparently split as a result of old age.
"It's been here for a long time. I would say it's probably 40 or 50 years old. Sometimes it's a cast iron line and it gets tired just like we do," says water superintendent Terry Windham.

The affected area was approximately six to eight city blocks and included East Lee Middle School, subdivisions and a mobile home park.
The Sanford Department of Public Works brought water to the middle school so students and staff could flush toilets and run the air conditioning system.
"This is the last day of school, so nothing's usual," said principal Eric Pittard.
