N.C. Residents Wait for State Tax Refunds

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Still waiting for your state income tax refund? The state says it is on the way.

TheNorth Carolina Department of Revenueadmits it is about a week or so behind schedule.

The department, which is using new state-of-the-art scanning equipment, says there have been some kinks in changing systems.

The scanner is handling two-thirds of the returns; the rest are being processed by hand.

The state will process 3.5 million individual state tax returns; two-thirds of those taxpayers are expecting a refund.

If you filed a paper return, wait 12 weeks before inquiring about your refund; for electronic returns, wait four weeks.

To check the status of your refund, call919-733-4682. Have your Social Security number ready when calling.

The state will pay interest on refunds not issued 45 days from April 17 or when the return was filed, whichever date is later.
