ALAMANCE COUNTY — There was a major traffic jam on one of the state's major roadways during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Cars were stacked up onInterstates 40 and 85Saturday morning while crews made repairs to power lines damaged by winds during Thursday's storms. Detour traffic clogged small towns between Burlington and Graham.

"In my last 24 years with Duke Power, I can't recall any time we've shut down an interstate to make multiple crossings at one time," says Duke Power official Randy Welch.

The cable connection took a little more than an hour.

Some workers snapped shots of the shutdown. Others watched as the wires made their way up the poles.

After an hour of tie-ups and slowdowns, the interstates were reopened to drivers.
