FAYETTEVILLE — June 5, 1996 - 9:12 a.m. EDT

A 7-year-old boy was killed when a fire spread through a mobile home, and the victim's 11-year-old sister is credited with helping others escape, Cumberland County authorities said.

Kenneth Strickland died during the 3 a.m. blaze Wednesday at the home off N.C. 87, fire officials said. Investigators believe the fire started when a sheet or blanket got caught on a fan in the victim's room.

Six people were inside the house at the time, but Kenneth's 11-year-old sister was able to wake up other members of the household and get them out of the house, according to the station.

The 11-year-old girl was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital, authorities said.
