Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — May 28, 1996 - 6:17 a.m. EDT

Testimony is scheduled to begin today in the murder trial of Angel Guevara, who is accused of killing a Johnston County deputy sheriff.

The shooting that left Deputy Paul West dead occurred Sept. 11, 1995, when West went to check the suspect's identity.

Lieutenant Ronald Medlin was wounded.

Guevara was arrested in New York City.

A judge denied a defense request to move the trial from Johnston County. But jurors in the case were selected in Nash County. The trial will still be held in Johnston County.
