Raleigh House Fire Under Investigation

RALEIGH — July 9, 1996 - 12:20 p.m. EDT

As family and friends mourn, investigators are still trying to find out how a house fire got started in Raleigh.

The fire, which burned a house on Sunnybrook Road killing 49-year-old Shirley Brantley, was reported at about 8:40 Monday morning. Brantley's body was found in the front yard of the house she had lived in with her husband for over 30 years.

Investigators say the woman's husband, Mac Brantley, was inside the house and was not injured.

Three passers-by say they saw Shirley Brantley, her clothing afire, and tried to help, but her injuries were too severe. The passers-by told investigators they saw a gasoline can in the yard.

Some are speculating that Shirley Brantley was preparing to mow the lawn. There was a lawn mower sitting outdoors behind the house at the time of the fire, but official details of the fire's origin will not be determined until an investigation is complete
