Closing Arguments for Guevara Trial

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — June 17, 1996, 12:10 p.m. EDT

Closing arguments are under way today in the trial of Angel Guevara. He is charged in the shooting death of Johnston County deputy sheriff Paul West.

West and his supervisor, deputy Ronald Medlin, had gone to Guevara's mobile home to confirm an identification. Shortly after West entered the trailer, shots rang out and West was dead. Medlin was also injured by gunfire outside the trailer. Guevara then fled to New York, where he was eventually captured while talking on a phone in Penn Station.

Guevara has said he shot the officers in defense of his young son, who he thought would be harmed by West.

Assistant District Attorney Mike Beam disputed that claim.

If arguments wrap up, the verdict could come later today, but it would more likely be handed down tomorrow. If Guevara is found guilty, the next phase of the trial will focus on sentencing
