Tropical Depression Heads to Carolinas

MIAMI — June 18, 1996, 11:41 a.m. EDT

The National Weather Service in Miami has issued a tropical storm warning from Edisto Beach, South Carolina to Cape Lookout, North Carolina. A tropical storm watch is in effect from north of Cape Lookout to the North Carolina/Virginia border, including Pamlico Sound and Albemarle Sound.

Small craft in the warning and watch areas are being advised to remain in port. Specific advice for these areas can be found in statements issued by local National Weather Service offices.

At 11 a.m., the depression center was near latitude 30.5 north, and longitude 79.0 west -- or about 175 miles south-southeast of Charleston, South Carolina.

The depression is moving toward the north at near 13 miles an hour. This motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles an hour, with higher gusts in squalls primarily north and east of the center.

The depression could become a tropical storm later today.

Rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches are possible along the path of the system
