Durham Neighborhood Tense after Shooting

DURHAM — June 14, 1996 - 7:15 p.m. EDT

Residents of the River Forest section of Durham are concerned about the safety of their neighborhood after five armed gunmen burst into a house Thursday night.

When the five masked men made their entrance, they forced the ten people inside to strip and lie on the floor. They then robbed them, and shot two people.

Bridgette Parham, a River Forest resident, says the incident was very unusual for that neighborhood.

Police say one victim was hit in the groin and had no pulse when rescue workers arrived on the scene. He was revived and is now in critical condition. The second victim was shot in the mouth and is in stable condition.

Other nearby residents say they are worried about changes in their neighborhood. Artelia Wade says people had complained about activities at that particular house before.

Police are looking for the five gunmen, and say the shooting appears to have been drug-related, although only a small amount of drugs was found.
