Seven People Injured in Johnston County Accident

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — June 7, 1996 - 3:30 p.m. EDT

Two tractor-trailers collided Friday morning in Johnston County and, within minutes, two cars collided in a separate accident triggered by the first.

Seven people were injured and two of them, both children, remain at Duke Medical Center. Two adults were treated and released. All four were flown to Duke in a medical transport helicopter.

Both wrecks occurred on U.S. Highway 70 just east of Interstate 95 at about 7:30 a.m. Witnesses say the impact of the second accident was so great that children were thrown from a vehicle.

Jenny Peedin, a witness to the accidents who works nearby, says many drivers don't stop at the traffic light in that area.

The two children at Duke are said to be in good condition. A third, unidentified child was one of the three who were thrown to the pavement. There is no information on the third child at this time.
